BBC’s Cardiff station (5WA)
On 13 February 1923 Wales first tuned into the BBC’s Cardiff station (5WA), located at 19 Castle Street, Cardiff, which was later to become part of the BBC Regional Programme and in 1939 as part of the BBC Home Service. Originally, Wales was served from a variety of bases around the country. During World War II, all regional services ceased with Home Service only being broadcast from London, although some Welsh content was included. The BBC’s base at Bangor hosted the BBC Variety Department during the war, although never officially announced.
